THE ARTHURS' WHO ROSE TO HIGH OFFICE IN LIMERICK

As you can see from the list below many members of the Arthur family served the city of Limerick with disctinction as both mayor and sheriff up to about the year 1700.

Eventually due to the Penal laws that prevented Catholics from holding public office no more family members were elected to these prestidious public offices.-

It should be noted that there are a number of names like John Fitz-Thomas Arthur; this means John Arthur the son of Thomas Arthur. The Fitz is used in the same way that Mac is used in the Irish language or Ben is used in Arabic.

As can be seen many members of the Arthur family held high positions in Limerick until 1608. Here the Penal Laws intervened and only a few members of the family held any office until 1849 when David Leahy Arthur became High Sheriff. This man was not really an Arthur. He assumed the name as he was a direct descendent through a female line from a daughter of Francis Arthur who died in 1824 in Dunkirk in France..

From the time of the Normans until 1608 the Arthur’s were the aristocracy and prince merchants of Limerick. As can be seen from the table of Mayors and Sheriffs the Arthur family held those high offices an unusually large number of times for one family. Indeed it would seem that the gaps between a member of the Arthur family holding one office or the other were quite short.
